The purpose of a chemical peel is to slough off dead skin revealing newer, fresher skin for anti-ageing purposes to give you a radiant glow. There are many different types of chemical peels out in the market most popular are; Glycolic acid peels a type of AHA (alpha hydroxyl acid), Salycilic acid a BHA (beta hydroxyl acid), Jessner and Phenol peels. Chemical peels are classified according to their depth of penetration, depending on the condition of the skin and skin type.

At Juvea Aesthetics we use 40% TCA, for superficial or medium depth penetration depending on the physical state of the skin, which is controlled by the physician. Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) has anti-ageing benefits by sloughing off dead skin cells, stimulating the growth of collagen. The aim of the acid is to remove imperfections, improving the appearance, elasticity and texture of the skin.

The Science Behind TCA – How It Works

Like all chemical peels, the objective is to remove the top layers of dead skin. The skin is made up from a protein called keratin. Just how our hair and nails grow, so does our skin. Every day our skin cells are constantly shedding by the epidermis in a process called keratinisation. As we age our cell turnover slows down, hence a build up of dead skin cells (thick stratum corneum) causing a dull, sallow appearance to our skin. Therefore chemical peels give us a helping hand to speed up the cell turnover to reveal fresh new, healthy skin.

Do I require an initial consultation?

Depending on your skin type, your skin may require prepping. The chemical peel solution will then be applied directly to your skin. The solution will vary in strength to produce a light, medium or deep peel. Following treatment, a neutralising agent will be applied to the treatment area.

How does the treatment work?

Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) is a chemical solution that is applied to the skin. The solution causes the layer of skin to separate and peel off. The new regenerated skin underneath is usually smoother, less wrinkled and more even in both tone and colour than the old skin.

How long does treatment take?

A chemical peel is an outpatient procedure that generally takes less than 30 minutes to complete. More than one session may be required to achieve optimal results.

How many sessions will I need?

The number of treatments required will depend on your skin concerns and your cosmetic goals. For the average client we recommend a course of 2-4 peels every 4-6 weeks to maximise results.

Is a Glycholic peel suitable for my skin?

This treatment is great for making skin appear smoother, healthier and tighter with a more even skin texture and tone. Great for those with dry skin, oily and acne-prone skin, and also beneficial in reducing pigmentation such as age/sun spots.

What will I experience after the peel?

Your skin may flake after 3-5 days. Not all patients shed skin in the same way, as all patients are different. Rest assured you will not shed your skin completely like a snake! When you do start to peel, do not rub the skin harshly or use exfoliant products. These can cause redness and irritation and possible infection. Continue to use the moisturising cream prescribed by the Aesthetician at Juvea.
How long does treatment take?

It takes usually 4-6 treatments at three to four week intervals to achieve the desired effects. Most patients can undergo glycolic peels without any side effects.

The treated skin is virtually normal in appearance. The fact that the patient underwent a peel is usually undetectable to others. Patients may experience mild sloughing, peeling, redness is temporary and normal.
