Causes

Sagging skin cannot be put down to just one cause, there are many possible reasons as to why skin may lose its spring, and it can often be a combination of a few reasons.

One of the most predominant causes is certainly ageing. As we age our skin naturally loses its supportive connective tissue. As the skins collagen and elastin depletes, so does its plump, youthful and soft appearance. Combined with weakening muscles losing tone and longer exposure to the pull of gravity, sagging skin seems almost inevitable.

Another common possible cause for sagging skin is sun exposure. The more exposure our skin has to the sun’s harmful rays, the more likely it is that our skin will suffer sun damage to skin cells which can increase the effects of ageing, including breaking down collagen and elastin prematurely and losing skin elasticity.

Weight loss is also a possible cause for sagging skin, especially in cases of a large amount of weight loss over a short period of time. Unfortunately many people in cases of extreme weight loss find themselves with a large amount of excess skin which has been too stretched out to naturally snap back.

Impact on Life

People suffering with sagging skin can experience feelings of embarrassment, shame and lowered self-esteem. In many cases sagging skin is quite natural however it can still inflict a great deal of insecurity on the person who is experiencing excess or drooping skin.

Sagging skin can make a person look older than they are, or draw attention to the fact that they are ageing. If a person wants to conceal their age sagging skin can cause them problems.

Similarly if a person is experiencing sagging skin following extreme weight loss, that person can feel disappointed that they have achieved their weight loss goals yet are still not completely happy with their appearance due to the left over skin.

Treatments Available & How they work.

There are treatments available which can improve the appearance of sagging skin.

You can of course take preventative action in the form of keeping your body at a healthy weight by ensuring you lead a healthy lifestyle including a balanced diet and regular exercise. Wearing SPF everyday will decrease the effects of sun damage and a good skincare routine can hold off the effects of ageing.

If however it is too late for preventative action and sagging skin is already present, there are aesthetic treatments available which can improve the appearance of this condition.

Laser Skin Rejuvenation – Non-Surgical

At Juvea Aesthetics we achieve effective skin rejuvenation using our Cynosure RevLite and ICON lasers. We believe this is the most effective laser skin rejuvenation technology to effectively treat all skin types for firmer, more youthful-looking skin.

This Treatment produces dramatic results by reducing the appearance of wrinkles and loose skin using a laser to heat the collagen under the skins surface. This process causes the skin to contract and tighten.

It is a non-invasive, non-surgical procedure with no down-time. Results are noticeable immediately after the treatment and additional tightening occurs over the following few months. For optimum long lasting results we recommend two or three treatments about a month apart.

Pelleve – Non-Surgical

The Pellevé® system treats sagging skin using radio frequency technology. The radio frequency energy is used to build a level of heat which is then used to target the point where the skin and fatty layers meet. By doing this, the growth of new collagen is encouraged, improving skin elasticity and tightening the skin.
It is common for noticeable improvements to be seen after just one treatment but a course of two to three treatments is recommended to achieve the best results.

Neck and Face Lift – Surgical

A combination of Facelift surgery, clinically known as Rhytidectomy, and neck lift surgery, Platysmaplasty, can be used to remove excess or sagging skin. The procedure will also reduce the appearance of facial wrinkles and other tell-tale signs of ageing.
The procedure involves a facial plastic surgeon lifting the skin and fat layer away from the underlying muscles into an elevated and tightened position.

The surgeon will remove excess pockets of fat and skin resulting in more aesthetically pleasing contours and a rejuvenation of the the facial structure.
